Utrecht maakt zich klaar voor FREEMOTE! Tijdens dit 5-daagse festival voor elektronische kunst en co-creatie wordt 4000m2 ingericht met kunst- en media-installaties, exposities, AV-optredens en meer. Hier zal ter plekke de meest fascinerende nieuwe mediakunst worden gemaakt en gedeeld.
Kunst anno 2011. Maar anders dan bij klassieke schilderijen en Delfts blauwe borden, wordt nieuwe mediakunst zelden in een kunst- en cultuurhistorisch perspectief geplaatst. Dus hoe schatten we het op waarde? Hoort een installatie als Spatial Sounds thuis in een traditioneel museum? Zijn oude computer graphic films uit de jaren 70 pure nostalgie, of gewoon bedroevend? En wat zou je neerleggen voor 5 minuten abstracte noise? Kortom, de vraag die niemand durft te stellen: nieuwe mediakunst, wat is het waard?
SETUP komt tijdens dit festival met de live-show Tussen Kunst & Glitch, een media-eigenwijze variant op het populaire tv-programma. Makers & liefhebbers van mediakunst delen op het podium een mooi, ontroerend of grappig verhaal over hun favoriete werk. Maar heeft het werk naast persoonlijke waarde ook culturele waarde? En hoe zit het met de cash-value? Experts plaatsen het werk in een context, en geven het ongenadige oordeel: onschatbare waarde of waardeloze prullaria.
Tussen Kunst & Glitch plaatst je midden in een spannend televisie-format, waar we met een verhaal en een knipoog ontdekken wat we met mediakunst kunnen, mogen en moeten.

FREEMOTE is coming! During this festival of electronic art and co-creation, an area of 4000 m2 gets stuffed with installations, AV performances, exhibitions, screenings and more. A place for creating and sharing fascinating new media artworks.
These works show us the meaning of art and creation in a digital era. But -quite unlike classical paintings or Dutch Delftware- new media art is not that often looked at from an art-historical point of view. How then do we determine its value? Does an installation like Spatial Sounds belong in a traditional museum? Do computer graphics films from the seventies breathe pure nostalgia, or are they just saddening in general? And how much you're willing to pay for 5 minutes of abstract noise? In short, a question no one dares to approach: new media art, what's it really worth?
Medialab SETUP presents an alternative version of the Antiques Roadshow, based upon a popular tv show (in Dutch called 'Tussen Kunst & Kitsch'). Makers and lovers of new media art claim the stage, and share their funny, beautiful or even touching stories concerning their favourite art work. But apart from this personal value, do these works have any cultural value or cash value at all? This is where our experts step in, to provide the necessary art- historical context, and to judge without mercy: are we looking at something of true value, or have we encountered worthless knick knacks?
The Antiques Roadshow goes digital, and puts you in the middle of an exciting tv format. With a story and a wink, we discover what we can, may and should do with media art.
