Subtlemob Masterclass

Subtlemobs are an exciting new form of storytelling that mixes sound design, storytelling, crowdsourcing and turns it all into an emotional, theatrical night.

IN the past month, SETUP, supported by creator Duncan Speakman, brought together a mix of Utrecht's creative talent to create the first Open Source Subtlemob. That's right: all audiofiles, sound recordings, the script and of course the final story are freely available to download.

This starterkit makes it easier to organise subtlemobs by giving subtlemob designers something to start from.

But there are no Subtlemob designers. Yet.

In this masterclass Duncan Speakman and the designers of the Open Source Subtlemob will train 15 participants in the art of telling participatory and engaging audio-based experiences.

Our goal is to bring relevant people together in order to jumpstart new development and sow new subtlemob seeds. We hope that we will have new versions finished by the end of the masterclass, but will be even happier if new partners in subtlemob creation appear.

WHO IS THIS FOR

This masterclass is intended for people who can already bring a relevant skill to the table, but want to explore the creation of subtlemobs and similar experiences. You can earn a place at the table if you:

- Have sound design skills
- Have storytelling or theatre development skills
- Have an interesting direction in which you would want to take subtlemobs.

Apply by sending an email to dongwei@setup.nl and detail your skills and motivation. There are 15 spots available, and we will select the most diverse group of candidates.

• 10:30 Coffee, Introductions
• 11:00 Introduction by Duncan Speakman, showcasing the details of a subtlemob, space for questions
• 11:30 presentation of ideas of directions to take the subtlemob, creation of teams around popular new themes
• 12:00 Lunch, further introductions. After lunch we get to work:
• 13:30 Detailed and hands-on making-of exposition of the current Open Subtlemob: From files and resources to things learned while testing in the field.
• 14:00 Working in teams (modify the story, make an inventory of what needs to be created or recorded)
• 17:00 Access to voice artist

Sunday

• 10:30 Coffee
• 11:00 Short presentations of the plans for the day
• 11:15 Back to work!
• 12:00 Lunch
• 13:00 Access to voice artist]
• 17:00 Presentation of the new stories and modifications, as well as the process that led to them. Planning new dates for subtlemob experiences.

PRACTICAL DETAILS

Costs

This event is subsidised by the Office of Cultural Affairs of the City of Utrecht and the Dutch Fund for Cultural Participation. Thanks to their help we can offer you this masterclass for only 50 euros. The real price would be around 500 euros per person.

- Access to the team and masterclass location
- Access to voice artists and recording tools (please bring your own too)
- Lunch, coffee, tea, cookies and drinks
- Inclusion in the Linked-in Subtlemob group

Location

The masterclass will be held in the wonderful OG183 space in the heart of Utrecht, on the historical canal. We have access to the wharf and, weather permitting, will be able to spend time there.

Language

During the event presentations will be in English, and we encourage english speakers to participate. Since the masterclass has a strong focus on language skills, groups will be formed around language first (Dutch or English), and skills second.
